Windows 7 stuck on shutting down

I bought a new laptop with Vista installed. However I was entitled to a free upgrade to Win 7 Vista was working fine at this point. After the upgrade I'm unable to shutdown the laptop, because the screen hangs at the 'shutting down' stage.
The only way to restart it is to a hard shutdown. Win 7 works ok when switched on it is only the shutdown bit that is frustrating. Please advise? Wednesday, February 24, PM.
